About the instructor
Cristin Brew, MFT
Cristin has been working with the LGBT population for the past eight years at Spectrum. She is well-versed in the stages of identity development for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people as well as best practices in serving LGBT clients. Cristin will be presenting all four seminars.

Working with LGBT clients

This seminar provides an overview of clinical issues in working with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender clients of all ages. Participants will learn relevant
terminology, best practices, and have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers. This seminar is designed to help providers move from being “LGBT-friendly” to“LGBT-knowledgeable”.

Training objectives:

  • Providers will have an increased understanding of LGBT issues and the obstacles to accessing services.
  • Providers will have greater knowledge of how to make their services more accessible to LGBT clients
  • .Providers will have greater knowledge of resource information and referral for LGBT clients.

Working with LGBT youth

This seminar provides an overview of clinical issues in working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth. Participants will learn relevant
terminology, best practices, and hear from guest speakers. Participants will become familiar with how to recognize gender variance in children, identity development of gay/lesbian/bisexual youth, typical stages of 'coming out' and the impact of societal and familial homophobia/transphobia on queer youth.

Training objectives:

  • Providers will have an increased understanding of LGBT identity formation in youth.
  • Providers will have greater knowledge of the stressors LGBT youth face and how to support them in developing healthy identities.
  • Providers will have greater knowledge of resource information and referral for LGBT youth and their families.

Working with LGBT seniors

This seminar provides an overview of clinical issues in working with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender seniors. Participants will learn relevant terminology, best practices, and have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers. Participants will learn about LGBT aging issues and will gain a broader understanding of what it means to be “gay and grey”.

Training objectives:

  • Providers will have an increased understanding of the fact that most LGBT seniors are hidden,isolated and underserved.
  • Providers will have greater knowledge of how to make their services more accessible to LGBT seniors whether or not these clients “come out” to them as L,G,B, or T.
  • Providers will have greater knowledge of resource information and referral for LGBT seniors.

Working with Transgender Clients

This seminar provides an overview of clinical issues in working with transgender clients. Participants will learn relevant terminology, best practices, and
have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers. While transgender people have been around for as long as people have existed, the term ‘transgender” is relatively new and our social dialogue about gender identity is just beginning. Join us in a safe environment to learn more about gender identity, gender variance, transsexuals, cross dressing, drag performance, intersex people and more.

Training objectives:

  • Providers will have the opportunity to examine their own experience and understanding of gender.
  • Providers will have an increased understanding of the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity and will learn about various transgender identities.
  • Providers will have greater knowledge of the barriers that transgender clients face in accessing services and how transphobia impacts mental health.
  • Providers will have greater knowledge of resource information and referral for transgender clients.
