Last year, Spectrum received a number of photographs and art pieces from the collection of Spectrum friends, Martha Ley and Joelle Yuna. The collection was donated to Spectrum by Joelle, Martha's partner of many years, after Martha's death in 2006.
Martha was a unique and talented photographer and writer, and many of her photographs will be on display. During her lifetime, she traveled widely to natural landscapes of the American West, through the lands of Native Americans, among villages of East Africa, into the Alaska frontier, and to Europe and Greece to record her unique vision of the world.
Martha once said: "Photography can help people cross borders, not only international frontiers but also other, more subtle borders. Photographs expand the viewer's vision in different ways, inspiring a new way of seeing or stimulating the senses so an image triggers a feeling of warmth from the sun, evokes the smell from a forest, or creates a deep sense of calm in the spirit."
We are grateful to Joelle Yuna for this wonderful gift of a selection of art and photography from Martha's selection, and honored to present this exhibit in Martha's memory.
